This is the original recipe I received from a friend(who has recently started her own blog) after trying one of her cupcakes! They were delicious. I just didn't have these boxed items when I wanted to make them and instead of going to the store I decided to make these things from scratch...So I changed up the whole recipe, and did the Homemade Hostess Cupcakes as listed and pictured in this link.
But for the boxed style check it out below!
Cupcakes:
1 box chocolate cake mix (+ingredients on back of box needed to make cake)
Filling:
1 cup of whipped vanilla/white frosting
1/2 cup marshmallow creme
Frosting:
1 cup whipped chocolate frosting
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 T. corn syrup
3 T. whipped vanilla/white frosting
Make cupcakes according to box directions. Allow to completely cool.
Use the handle of a wooden spoon (or something close to that size) to make a 1/2" hole in the cupcakes (make sure you don't go all the way to the bottom). Mix together filling ingredients in a small bowl. Put the filling mixture in a resealable plastic bag or a decorating bag. Snip off the end of the plastic bag or put a large-ish tip on the decorating bag. Insert tip of bag into hole on cupcakes and squeeze out filling into cupcakes. (I don't know if I used too much filling or what...but my filling only filled 12 or so of my cupcakes. So if you want to fill all 24 cupcakes, double the filling recipe.)
For the frosting, combine chocolate frosting, chocolate chips and corn syrup in a small microwaveable safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Microwave for 15 seconds at a time until the frosting is smooth and melty. Dip cupcakes (upside down) into frosting and allow to set.
Spoon 3 T. white frosting into decorating bag or small resealable bag. (I used the smallest decorating tip I had.) Pipe loops (or whatever you want) on each cupcake.

Your recipe sounds so much better. I've always hated store bought frosting. Something about the taste just ruins cake! :-)
