Experiment-senses

Why doesn't food taste as good when you have a cold?

Here was a simple experiment we did to find this out!

Blindfold your student.  Then prepare two drinks with straws in them.  Hold your nose while you  take a small drink from each of them.  Could he tell which was which?

He could barely tell the difference.  Even though they were two different flavors of juice.  Your tongue can only tell they are both sweet.  It can not tell them apart.

Then he took a drink of each of them without plugging his nose!  Now he could tell the difference!

Experiment-Taste Test

We were talking about our senses.  In particular, our tongue and tasting.

So we experimented with a taste test.

Salt, coffee, powdered sugar, a potato chip, and a dried apple chip.

We used the powdery things in different parts of the tongue to see if they tasted differently either on the side, front or back of the tongue.

First it was coffee- BLAH he said.
Then salt- Hmmm- is that salt?
Then powdered sugar-MMMM Can I have more of that one?

And on to the apple chip in one hand and the potato chip in the other.  He tried the potato chip first, enjoyed it, but then was surprised when he bit into the apple chip.

Money game

Another find from the worksheet website.

Dollar Dice

Each number is worth a different coin, including lose a turn and any coin.  The goal is to get one dollar worth in your coins by rolling the dice.  But you have to get one dollar exactly.  So after a while you can only get a certain coin.  if you have 78cents and you roll the number for a quarter you can't collect that time because that would be more than one dollar total.

Enjoy. :)

Bacon & Cheese Scrambled Eggs

Bacon & Cheese Scrambled Eggs

8-12 eggs
Real Bacon Bits
Cheddar

Put all eggs in a bowl and whip together.  Turn on the stove and let the pan sit until it is hot.  Then add the eggs.  Once they are almost completely cooked add the bacon and mix in.  Add the cheddar cheese last until melted in. Serve.

*Make sure these are the REAL Bacon pieces you get in the grocery section with the salad dressing, or chop up your own cooked bacon.  Not, the fake-o bake-o bacon bits. :)  icky.

English-Nouns

We don't have an English "Curriculum" right now.  So we are just finding things and talking about it casually.  Here is a great worksheet option that I found at this link.

Now this website where I get some of these worksheets, used to be free for everything!  Now they have a membership so only a few of their things are free.  But it's pretty reasonable, and they have really great stuff on there so it just might be worth the membership. :)

You could make some of these things yourself though, if you are ambitious enough.  I might end up making some more things like this myself.  If I do I will definitely share them with you.

What activities do you do to work on your nouns?

Baked Macaroni & Cheese

Looking for a great Macaroni and Cheese alternative to the fake box meals?  Well this is a great option!

I got this recipe from my sister-in-law.  Super easy, and loved by all!  We've had it 3 times in the last 2 weeks. :)

Baked Macaroni & Cheese

8 oz elbow macaroni noodles
1 pkg cheddar
8 oz cottage cheese
8 oz sour cream
1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
salt & pepper to taste
(ham/meat optional addition)

Cook the noodles, drain and put in a 9x13 pan.  Mix everything else in with the noodles in the pan, then spread out in the pan.  Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

Apple Pork Loin Hoagie with Caramel sauce

Ok, I had posted this before, click here for the original post.  But at the end of the post I mentioned some things I'd maybe do differntly next time.  Well, I did those different things this time, and Oh WOW!  What a difference.  TJ loved it!  He gave it a 10 out of 10, which doesn't happen that often.  He thinks I should sell these at the fair. :)

Ok, well here's the recipe.

Apple Pork Loin Hoagie with Caramel sauce

2-3 pound pork-loin roast
1 onion, sliced in wedges
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup apple juice
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 apples, chopped
1 (16-ounce) bag coleslaw mix
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Hoagie Buns

Caramel sauce:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup apple juice
Bring to a boil on the stove, and set aside.

Put onion wedges into the bottom of your crockpot.  Mix the thyme, kosher salt, pepper and cinnamon in a bowl.  Rub into all sides of the pork loin.  Add apple juice and lemon juice to the crockpot. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or on high for 4-6. The longer you cook it, the more shredded and juicy the meat will become. 20-30 minutes before serving, remove meat from crockpot and let sit on a cutting board. Put chopped apples (no need to peel) and the whole bag of coleslaw into your crockpot. Shred the meat and add to the pot.   Then add the apple cider vinegar.   Add extra salt and pepper to taste.

Toast the insides of your Hoagie buns, and mix together the caramel sauce when you are ready to serve.

Load the bun with the meat mixture, pour over 2 tbsp of the caramel sauce and enjoy the sandwich!

Yumm!

TJ gave this a 10 out of 10!  Yee-haw :)

Italian Sausage Pasta

Italian Sausage Pasta

I had to make this meal up, because we were down to nothing on the meal plan list.  So I scrounged up some things from the pantry and freezer and thought how can I make this into a meal.  This was actually simple yet delicious, and I made it again a few days later!

1 pkg. noodles (bowtie or rotini)
1 lb Sausage
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
Italian dressing
banana peppers (optional)
black olives (optional)

Cook the noodles, and run cold water over to cool them down.  Brown the sausage.   Mix everything together and serve immediately.  We put the banana peppers on our own individual servings instead of mixing it in with the whole batch.
