Bear's 4th Birthday!

Bear picked a Toy Story Birthday theme.
Particularly Buzz Lightyear.
So I made a Buzz Lightyear Cake.
And this time, my idea came through for me, just as I thought and wanted it to be.

I have a pampered chef bowl, and you can make a cake in it.
I've never done it before this weekend though.  It turned out good.
You just have to cook it at a lower heat for a longer amount of time since it's so thick.

First made a cake mix...I made a homemade white cake mix.
Then you bake it at 325 for and hour and 20 minutes.  And you have to keep checking back and stick a knife in to see if it's done all the way through.  I had to add minutes a few times to get the knife to come out clean.  I also buttered the bowl to help it come out better.  But I still have to put a knife down the side of the bowl to release it.  First let it cool in the bowl a little, then tip it and let it cool the rest of the way on a cooling rack.

Next I made the frosting.

Here's the frosting recipe
1 cup butter
1 cup shortening
1 bag powdered sugar
5 Tbsp milk
1 Tbsp vanilla

Beat the butter and shortening together first, then add the rest of the ingredients.  Mix together on a low speed for 5 minutes until light and fluffy.
This make a large quantity.  I had left over.  But it's nice to have extras, especially when you want to make other colors of frosting.

For the other colors I use my baggie trick.  Use a cup to push the tip of the baggie in the cup.  Put some frosting in there.  Don't zip the baggie shut though, you need room for the air to escape as you squeeze.  Cut a small tip off the very bottom corner.  Now you have a homemade way to squeeze out the frosting.
I smoothed on the first layer and then used the baggie trick to get the decoration.

Next I got a small little buzz toy and put him on top.  Then topped him off with a punch cup to make it look like the window of the spaceship.

Using the baggie trick to decorate the cup to make it look more like a space ship.
Then I cut out the wings for the ship.  Drew on them and colored them in.  I used cardstock paper and then I put packing tape on both sides to "laminate" it so I could stick it in the side of the cake.

And the finished product!
