Fire Station Field Trip

Today we went to the local Fire Station.  They gave us a tour, and talked with us about what they do.

They were very kind and helpful there.  I am so glad we were able to go on this field trip.

Here are some pictures....

Can you see their reflection in the bumper?

 Here's the pole....
The kids waiting for someone to slide down it.

There he is....they all thought that was fun, and they wanted to see it again.

Talking about the firefighters who live at the fire station.

All the extra doors and gadgets in the fire truck.  They really utilize every inch of space on those trucks to carry everything.

Oh yeah, I was there too! :)

Children's Theater

A field trip review and what the Bible has to say.

Sometimes when you are in charge of something you are held responsible at all different levels.  So I feel the need to respond to the field trip we took today.  I didn't do much investigation on this one.  I thought that the children's theater would portray events and stories in a little more whimsical way no matter the subject.  But I was proven wrong today.

We went to see a production at the Children's Theater called "A Wrinkle in Time".  If you want the short story, I will not recommend this production to you.  And I feel the need to apologize, whether you took part, or know nothing about the event. :)  However, keep reading to see how we can analyze this with scripture to see what we can learn from it!

Please read all the way to the end!

Now don't get me wrong.  They did a good job with set, and props, and the actors and actresses knew what they were doing and did not fail at their job.  I will definitely give them credit for all their hard work, and long hours!

Some of the aspects of this type of play/movie, honestly are just not my cup of tea. :)
There always seems to be a part in a movie where it seems a little darker, or more intense, or something, but then it turns happy, and you go back to the fun loving place.  This story was all set in the dark, intense, deep setting the whole time.  There was no relief from that dark feeling.  I'm not a fan of that.  This was so deep and intense, I think the true HIDDEN meaning, which could be positively emphasized more, really should have been labeled for much more older children than 2nd grade, which they had listed as the understanding age.

Like anything, we need to see what the Bible has to say about that.  So with that in mind, if you gave this story a Biblical twist to the deep hidden meaning portrayed here,  it is that the (A)darkness(evil) or "IT" as they called it, is so (B)strong and can pull you/persuade you/(C)entice you in to things or places you don't want to be....i.e. Sin, or even Hell.  But if you have the true (D)light,...i.e. JESUS, than you are able to actually (E)stand against that evil that is fighting so hard to get you to give in to it.

(A)
John 3:19
This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

(B)
Matthew 7:13-14
13 “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell[f] is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. 14 But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.

(C)
Proverbs 1:10
10 My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!
(click here to read the whole chapter of Proverbs 1.)
(D)
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 14:6
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

(E)
I John 4:4
4 But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

I hope you are truly living in the Light, that is JESUS, so you can see through the darkness all around you, and stand strong through it all!

Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant

I grew up watching Little House on the Prairie.  It was my grandma's favorite show too.
My husband  loves it so much that he purchased all 10 seasons of it on DVD.

We've been showing the dvd's to the boys, and we have some of the books that I've been reading to the boys.  They love hearing about how things were, "back in the old times" as they say.  It's good for them to see some of the history in it.

Even before the boys started getting into it, since my husband loves it so much I told him I should take him out westward in MN back to the area where I grew up to this play.  It is held in Walnut Grove, MN. About the life of Laura Ingalls while she was living in Walnut Grove, MN as a child.  It is full of the history of what happened then, what things were like for the town, and her in their travels, and how things ran back then.  They do a great job with this show!  Click here to see more on their webpage.

Here's a few pictures of the show.  They start at sundown, 9pm.  And it's about 2 hours long so it was a late night for the children.  But we knew that going into it, and it was worth it. :)  They really loved it.

It gets pretty dark as the show goes on, so it's hard to see in the picture, but they were portraying what they did to try and get the grasshoppers that came in multitudes and ate the crops, to leave by putting the fire next to them.  I'm glad we don't have those problems now-a-days. That would be terrible.

 Class time inside the church.

Building the church for the town.

We will have to go back again another day when they are older.  So they can understand even more of what's going on.

We are getting ready to start up our homeschool year so this is field trip one already under our belt for the 2011-2012 year. :)

Reptile and Amphibian Zoo

We have had this zoo in our town for over a year.  But never really had a great desire to go there.  Until today!  We've been talking about animals and their different groups....including reptiles and amphibians, so I thought this would be the perfect place for a Field Trip!

Turns out it was a big hit because we were there for over 2 hours.  And it was during lunch time and even when I said we should go get something to eat they were having too much fun and didn't want to leave!

Here's some highlights!

These guys are buddies.  He has his arm around him. Isn't that sweet?!
I think he just wanted to get in the water and didn't care if he walked over the turtle to get there.  But I like the idea of them being buddies instead. :)

You've got to check out this guy!  He is HUGE!

These snakes scared me.  They were just laying there, and then Monkey puts his finger up to the glass to point to them, and the big snake launches his head up and bangs it against the glass.  He was trying to eat Monkey's finger!

I thought it was so cute how this guy was sitting and holding on to this little branch.

They got to touch an alligator!

This was funny too....they got to hold a snake, and Monkey was all for it until.....

it started getting closer to his face.
Then he didn't care for it as much!

I was holding the snake too!  It's very soft and smooth.
But once it started trying to climb up my arm I had also had enough! :)
bleh!

Did you notice the difference in these 2 pictures?
The worker was holding a cricket for the chameleon to eat....
first he's eyeing it...then BAM!
Quickly out comes the tongue to snatch up his lunch!
Good aim!

We had such a good time I think we just may have to go back again.  They even have a family rate for the whole year.  That'd be cool to get to go there whenever you want!  I want to go back to see them feed the BIG Alligator.  They only feed him on Saturday's and Sunday's.

Well....maybe you have a hidden little field trip in your area that you haven't taken advantage of!  Check it out!  It just may be the best part of the day!

Trains

The next 10 school days we will be talking about transportation/travel.  Today we started with trains.  So first we read a book that talks about the different types of train cars, and how the rail road is made and other details.  Then we drove around over and under railroad tracks.

We drove over to an EXEMPT track and looked at it up close and walked along it. :)

And we have a rail car at the fair grounds "Village of Yesteryear", so we drove over to that to play around and see it.  Fun day at school.

One vacation TJ and I went on there was a small train in town like this.  Not a real train track.  To be silly I laid down on the track and pretended like it was coming to run me over.  So the boys have seen that in my scrapbook and wanted to take a picture like that too.

Then they decided to pretend like it was coming and stand there looking scared.  They are quite the actors. :)

Nature Walk

Homeschooling is great.  Because you can go for a walk in the wonderful outside world.  Look at leaves falling, climb on huge rocks.  Talk about how they formed or got there, and lots of things like that.  And that is a day of school. :)

We do other things with that, but sometimes that can just be it!  So great.  Kids are always learning.  Even in the little tasks of life.
